Kompot

Dec 26

Ingredients for Kompot

In my childhood years store bought soda and fruit juices were luxuries reserved for special occasions. Kompot was a nice alternative for everyday consumption in our family. Grandma’s Kompot was always so delicious during hot summer days cooked with hand picked berries and fruits from our garden as well as in winter time using dried fruits. If the drink is cooked with dried fruits it’s called Uzvar which was always a necessity for Christmas table being one of 12 dishes representing 12 Apostles.

This refreshing drink is made out of berries, dried, frozen or fresh fruits. My Russian and Ukrainian friends would agree that nothing is better from homemade Kompot. The benefit of homemade drinks, just like any other homemade dish over store bought soda or juices, is that you are in full control of ingredients, sugar and God knows what else. I can’t imagine me having a glass of store bought juice without diluting it with at least half as much water.

Apple or pear Kompot in a combination with cherries is my personal favorite, but I also like adding other berries sometimes playing with flavor.

Time to share my version of this aromatic, refreshing drink full of health benefits with all of you!

What you need:
3 lb various fruits or berries
1/2 cup sugar
2.5 gallons of water
lemon, lime, herbs (optional)
What to do:

In a big pot bring water to boil. Add the fruits with sugar and bring to a boil again. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes and remove from heat. Cover and bring to room temperature. Refrigerate and enjoy chilled!

I really like the background that our old and tired deck gives to this picture. Maybe we will have to keep the deck now, who knows…
